Efficient Image Management for OpenStack Using Block Storage Features - Tomoki Sekiyama, Hitachi, Ltd.

To operate services efficiently on IaaS environments, images management is one of the keys to realize system agility. For example in OpenStack environment, creation of new volume for virtual machine instances takes a long time to download the disk image for the VM.
We have implemented more efficient image management feature that can exploit copy-on-write features provided by storage arrays, that is merged into Mitaka-release OpenStack Glance and Cinder. By storing the image data in a Cinder volume, this feature realizes:
  • Quick volume-boot of virtual and bare metal machines using copy-less volume creation from images.
  • Sharing volume data among multiple tenants, that stores boot image, master datasets, etc.
We will introduce how it works, how to enable it, and our future plans.

Tomoki Sekiyama is a researcher in Hitachi where he is involved in research and development of Linux, Virtualization, OpenStack including building reliable cloud environment for enterprise systems. His focus is enhancement of reliability and stability of softwares used in enterprise systems based on his experience in developement of Mission Critical systems.
