Marty is a Tech Fellow. He has been advocating for Open Source from before that term existed. He joined GS in by responding to a 5-word advertisement that simply said "Linux Perl Tokyo Geeks Welcome". He has spent time programming in various languages, managing a large fleet of Linux hosts and storage systems, building containers and cloud platforms, delivering software, securing systems, teaching site reliability principles, breaking many things, and working with secrets and encryption.

He has presented at many Open Source conferences, including YAPC on 3 continents, OSCon on 2 continents, OSDC (just 1 continent), Linux Lunacy (at sea), and LinuxCon + ContainerCon Japan.
